Build one useful comparison before buying more tools

Start with one reader and one decision. Write the answer you would want them to leave with, then list the evidence you need before recommending anything.

Fictional brief: a solo tutor choosing an appointment scheduler

The task is one weekly booking workflow. Compare two options against reminders, cancellation handling and total cost. Include the calendar the tutor already uses: if it meets the need, say so. This example does not endorse or price a particular product.

  1. Write the reader, decision and finished output in one sentence.
  2. For each option, copy the relevant limits from a dated official source. Mark unknowns.
  3. Explain one useful difference, one limitation and who should skip the paid option.
  4. Put the affiliate disclosure beside the recommendation, if there is an affiliate relationship.
  5. Publish the answer and keep the source URL, checked date and next review date with your notes.

Done when: someone can explain the trade-off and choose a next step from your page without buying software first. A factual product claim without a source becomes a question to check.

After publishing, keep URL Inspection results separate from actual reader actions. An indexed page is not evidence that anyone completed the comparison or bought a product.

For a reusable source and cost record, the comparison workbook downloads now include an editable Affiliate Decision Record. Downloads use the existing email and VERIFY journey; the public exercise above can be completed on paper.

Continue with keyword research and the Search Console evidence log.

How to start affiliate marketing step by step: your first 30 days

The eight steps above are the whole job. Here is the order to do them in, planned for about 5 to 7 hours a week around a full-time job, with the exact action and a test that tells you the week is done.

30-day affiliate marketing start plan
WeekWhat you doDone when
Week 1: niche and productsWrite one sentence: “I help ___ who struggle with ___.” Then search “product affiliate program” for three products those readers already buy, and save each program’s terms page in a note. You have the sentence and three program links with their commission, cookie window and payout threshold written down.
Week 2: the siteBuy hosting with a domain, install WordPress or a site builder, and add an About page, a Contact page, a privacy policy and an affiliate disclosure. Then add the site to Google Search Console. The site is live with those four pages and Search Console shows it as verified.
Week 3: apply and write page oneApply to the one or two programs that fit best. Write your first page around one question a buyer asks, such as “best X for Y”, “X vs Y” or “is X worth it”.The page is published with a plain disclosure above the first affiliate link.
Week 4: two more pages and emailPublish two more question pages. Open a free email plan and add one sign-up form that offers something useful, such as a checklist.Three pages are live, the form sends you a test sign-up, and you have noted the first queries Search Console shows.

The plan measures what you control in the first month: pages published and forms working, not traffic or sales. No result is guaranteed.

What it costs to start affiliate marketing (prices checked 29 October 2026)

You can start for the price of hosting. Everything else in the first months has a free plan. Prices are from each vendor’s own pricing page, in US dollars before tax; introductory prices renew higher.

Start-up costs for an affiliate website
What you needLow-cost optionYou pay at the start
Hosting and domainHostinger Premium on the 48-month plan: $2.49 a month, renews at $10.99 a month; domain free for 1 year$119.52 today for 48 months
Hosting (alternative)Bluehost Starter on the 36-month term: $3.99 a month, renews at $9.99 a month$143.64 (3.99 × 36, our arithmetic)
Email listMailerLite Free: 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month. Or Systeme.io Free: 2,000 contacts, never expires, no credit card$0
Search dataGoogle Search Console, a free Google service$0
Affiliate programsNetworks such as ClickBank offer a free account; be wary of any program that charges you to join$0

So you can start for about $120 to $145 paid up front, which covers three to four years of hosting at the introductory price. Paid SEO or email tools can wait until a free limit actually stops you; our affiliate marketing tools guide shows what can wait.

How affiliate marketers get paid: the four commission types

Programs pay in one of a few ways, and the type changes which products are worth your time. Examples are from each program’s own page, checked 29 October 2026.

Affiliate commission types with examples
TypeHow it worksExample
Percentage of each saleA share of the order valueClickBank lists Revenue Share and CPA offers (up to 90% potential commission); Amazon Associates pays the standard commission in its agreement’s Appendix
RecurringA share of every renewal while the customer stays subscribedSysteme.io: 60% lifetime recurring; Mangools: up to 35% recurring
Flat amount per saleA fixed sum per new customerSemrush: from $100 to $300 for every sale, depending on what the customer buys
Per trial or leadPaid for a sign-up, not a purchaseSemrush: $10 per free trial

For a new site with little traffic, recurring commissions on a tool readers keep using can add up more steadily than one-off percentages on cheap products, but no type guarantees any earnings.

Choose one channel to start: website, YouTube, email or social

Affiliate marketing channels compared
ChannelGood forWatch out for
Website or blogSearch traffic to pages you own; room for comparisons and tablesTraffic builds slowly and is never guaranteed
YouTubeShowing how a product worksEditing time; the same disclosure duty applies to videos
Email listReaders who asked to hear from you; works alongside any other channelSome programs limit links in email (Amazon allows them only to opted-in readers)
Social mediaFast feedback on what your audience cares aboutPosts fade quickly, and each program sets its own rules for social links

Pick one main channel for your first three months, and start an email list on the side from day one: it is the one audience you reach without an algorithm in between.

Five beginner mistakes that waste the first three months

  1. Joining twenty programs. Two or three that fit your readers are easier to write about and to track.
  2. Writing about products instead of questions. A page that answers “which X should I buy for Y” helps a reader decide; a product description does not.
  3. Hiding the disclosure. Put it near the first link, not only in the footer.
  4. Buying paid tools on day one. Free plans cover email, search data and site checks until a limit actually stops you.
  5. Judging it after four weeks. Measure pages published and queries in Search Console first; sales come later, if at all, and are never guaranteed.

Three rules to follow before your first affiliate link

  1. Disclose the relationship, near the link. The FTC’s Endorsement Guides (16 CFR Part 255) say endorsers may be liable for failing to disclose unexpected material connections with an advertiser. A plain line such as “I earn a commission if you buy through these links”, placed where readers see it before the first link, is a clear way to do it; a footer note alone is easy to miss.
  2. Mark affiliate links for Google. Google asks site owners to mark paid links with rel="sponsored"; nofollow is still accepted. Most affiliate link plugins have a setting for it.
  3. Check where each program lets you put links. Amazon Associates’ Operating Agreement, for example, bars its links from printed material and ebooks and allows them in emails only when the reader opted in. Other programs differ, so read the terms before you post.

Want to start an affiliate program for your own product instead?

Some people searching “how to start affiliate marketing” sell something and want others to promote it. That is the other side of the same deal, and the steps are different:

  1. Set a commission you can afford after refunds, and decide your refund window, because affiliates will ask about both.
  2. Choose how sales are tracked. Some sales platforms include it: Systeme.io’s pricing page lists running your own affiliate program as a feature, and its free plan includes 1 affiliate program. Networks are the other route.
  3. Write short, clear terms: commission, cookie window, payout threshold and schedule, banned traffic such as brand bidding or spam, and the disclosure you require.
  4. Recruit people who already like the product: happy customers, your newsletter readers, and creators who review similar products.
  5. Watch the first sales by hand. The FTC’s guides say advertisers should give their endorsers guidance on disclosure and monitor their compliance.

The terms you would write are the same ones an affiliate checks, listed on our how to find affiliate programs page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to some common questions about starting affiliate marketing.

Do I need experience to start affiliate marketing?

No. You can learn as you go. Start with the basics in step 1, pick one niche and one platform, and publish consistently. Skills such as writing helpful reviews, basic SEO and email marketing improve with practice.

What’s the best niche for beginners?

The best niche is one you understand or enjoy, where people actively look for solutions and where there are reputable products to recommend. Broad topics such as health, personal finance or software are competitive, so beginners often do better with a narrower sub-niche. See how to choose an affiliate niche.

How much does it cost to get started?

Hosting is the only bill you need at the start: Hostinger Premium is $119.52 for 48 months and Bluehost Starter $3.99 a month on a 36-month term ($143.64 up front by our arithmetic), both checked 29 October 2026 and both renewing at a higher price. Email (MailerLite or Systeme.io free plans) and Google Search Console can be free. See the cost table above, and check prices again before you buy.

Can I do affiliate marketing without a website?

Yes, some affiliates use YouTube, social media or an email list instead, as long as each program’s terms allow it. A website is still worth considering because you control it and it can attract search traffic over time.

How long does it take to make money?

There is no fixed timeline and no guarantee of earnings. New websites often need several months before search traffic grows, and first commissions depend on your niche, content and audience. Plan for a long-term effort and read our earnings disclaimer.

Is affiliate marketing really legit?

Yes. Many retailers and software companies run affiliate programs and pay commissions for referred sales or sign-ups. Stay away from offers that require you to pay to join or that promise quick riches, and disclose your affiliate links clearly.

Can I start affiliate marketing with no money?

Almost. Free plans cover email (MailerLite, Systeme.io), search data (Google Search Console) and joining most programs. Hosting and a domain are the first thing worth paying for, about $120 to $145 paid up front for three to four years of hosting at the prices checked on 29 October 2026, because you then own the site.

Do I need an LLC to start affiliate marketing?

Not to join the programs on our how to find affiliate programs page: Systeme.io, for example, says anyone can join for free. Whether you should register a business, and how to report commissions, depends on your country and situation, so ask a qualified accountant; this is not legal or tax advice.

Which affiliate program is best for beginners?

One that sells something your readers already need and accepts a new site. Programs that state an easy start, such as Systeme.io (free, no application) and Mangools (no approval process), are listed with their terms on our how to find affiliate programs page.
