Check the keyword capacity you would actually use

If you are still choosing a first topic, start with the free 20-minute keyword session. If you have recurring research work, this checker shortlists among the three paid Mangools plans shown on its public pricing page. It does not assess free or legacy plans, every feature, or whether paid research will earn its cost.

Compare the limits and a worked research schedule
Published paid-plan capacity, checked November 1, 2026
PlanKeyword requests / 24hSERP requests / 24hTracked keywordsRank updates
Basic100100200Weekly
Premium500500700Weekly
Agency1,2001,2001,500Daily

Fictional schedule: 80 keyword requests, 60 SERP checks and 150 tracked keywords with weekly updates fit Basic's four checked limits. Change the busiest day to 120 keyword requests and Premium becomes the first listed tier that fits. Require daily rank updates and Agency becomes the first fit even with the original smaller workload.

Requests and suggestions are different units. Mangools' guide also explains that refreshing SERP data consumes a SERP lookup. Count your actual tasks and confirm reset rules in the account. If your workload exceeds a listed maximum, get a suitable quote or change the schedule before paying.

Before subscribing: check results per request, exports, seats, API access, country coverage and the actual task you need to finish. This checker does not evaluate those requirements. Confirm the included bundle, full monthly or annual charge and renewal terms; an annual monthly equivalent is not a monthly payment.

For a broader suite, use the existing comparison by task. Keep the article-brief exercise beside your shortlist so that more data leads to a usable output.

Leave with one article brief, not another keyword list

Use the existing free 20-minute research session, then make this decision before buying more data: what can you help this reader finish?

  1. Write the reader’s constraint. For example: “I need a bottle that fits my bag and does not leak when carried sideways.”
  2. Inspect the search results. Record whether they mainly answer a question, compare options or sell a product. Note the date and the actual pages you examined.
  3. Choose a task you can support. An explainer can clarify a lid specification; a leak claim needs suitable evidence. Do not present a manufacturer claim as your own test.
  4. Draft the answer and evidence list. Include a useful next step that does not require buying a product.
Worked example: narrow the question without inventing demand

Fictional planning example, not keyword-volume research. “Best bottle” needs a broad comparison. “Will this bottle fit my bag pocket?” needs dimensions, a way to measure the pocket and a fit margin. “Bottle leaks sideways” needs an evidence-backed troubleshooting answer. The publisher chooses the fit question because they can document the measurements and sources. They have not established that it will rank or sell.

Reader and constraint:
Proposed query and observed result type:
One task the page will finish:
Evidence URLs and date checked:
Claims I cannot support yet:
Free next step / optional product only if needed:

Keyword Planner’s search figures and advertising costs are estimates for ad planning; they are not proof that an organic page will rank. Check location, language and date range before comparing numbers. Source: Google’s Keyword Planner guide, checked October 31, 2026.

If the missing step is repeated competitor research, use the SEO workflow chooser. If you can finish the brief with the free method, publish and observe before adding a subscription.

A 20-minute keyword session with free tools

An example with a made-up niche, home coffee brewing:

  1. List 10 questions a buyer asks before buying, such as “best burr grinder for beginners” or “french press vs pour over”.
  2. Type each one into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions. If your site is live, open the Performance report in Google Search Console to see searches you already appear for.
  3. Open the top results for three of them and note the weak spots: forum threads, thin pages, outdated posts. Those are your openings.
  4. Pick one keyword per page you plan to write, and write its title down.

Free tools give you direction, not exact search volumes. A paid keyword tool starts to pay for itself once you publish every week. For full SEO suites with site audits, backlinks and rank tracking, see the best SEO tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best keyword research tool for affiliate marketing?

Semrush is our best overall pick because it combines keyword research, competitor analysis and content planning. Ahrefs is a strong alternative for experienced SEOs, and LowFruits is great for finding easier keywords.

Can I do keyword research for free?

Yes. Google Keyword Planner, Google Search Console and Google's own search suggestions are free. Paid tools add difficulty scores, competitor data and larger databases.

What is keyword difficulty?

Keyword difficulty is a tool's estimate of how hard it is to rank on page one for a keyword, usually based on the strength of the pages that already rank. Each tool calculates it differently.

What keywords should affiliate marketers target?

Buyer-intent keywords such as 'best', 'review', 'vs' and 'alternatives' often suit affiliate content, alongside helpful informational topics that build trust and internal links.

Do I need more than one keyword tool?

Not at first. One paid tool plus free Google data covers most needs; some affiliates add a specialist tool such as LowFruits later.

Do you earn money from these recommendations?

Yes. Some links on this page are affiliate links, so we may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Rankings are editorial and are not sold; read our affiliate disclosure for details.

Final Thoughts

Semrush is the most complete keyword research toolkit for most affiliate marketers, Ahrefs suits SEO professionals who want deep data, and LowFruits is a clever way for newer sites to find realistic opportunities.

Start with free Google data, add one paid tool when you publish regularly, and judge every keyword by whether you can create the most helpful page for it.
