Affiliate Marketing Checklist: 30 Actions, in Order
Three tabs deep and still not sure what to do first? Most checklists say “choose a niche” and “set up hosting”, then leave you searching for what that means. This free checklist is for beginners building a first affiliate business part-time. It puts 30 actions in six stages, in the order that matters, and gives each one the reason and a test that tells you it is finished, with a link to the guide that walks you through it for 17 of the 30.
- 30 actions in six stages, from how commissions work to where to spend
- A “done when” test for every action, and a guide link for 17 of them
- Time estimates for each stage
- A 6-page PDF with on-screen tick boxes, and a printable web page
Free. One short email, reply VERIFY, and the link is yours.
The checklist recommends no brand. Some pages we link to contain affiliate links (affiliate disclosure).

Stage 1 in full: what a finished action looks like
These are the five stage 1 actions exactly as the checklist gives them. The first takes about 20 minutes (an estimate); the whole stage, one or two evenings.
| Action | Why it matters | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Understand how affiliate marketing works | You recommend a product, a reader buys through your tracked link and the merchant pays you a commission. Knowing who pays whom, and when, shapes every later decision. | You can explain in two sentences who pays you, for what, and when. |
| Set your goals (income, timeline, lifestyle) | Write down the hours you can give each week, your budget and a realistic timeline. Most new sites take months before they earn anything and income is never guaranteed, so goals help you judge progress honestly. | Your weekly hours, your monthly budget and a date to review progress are written down. |
| Choose a niche with real buying interest | Pick a topic you can write about for years, where people buy products to solve a problem and where those products have affiliate programs. | You can name one audience, one problem and three products they buy to solve it. |
| Research your target audience | List their problems, questions and the words they use (forums, video comments, reviews). These become your content topics and headlines. | You have at least 20 real questions or phrases your audience uses, with where you found them. |
| Validate demand for your niche | Check that people search for the topic, that affiliate programs exist for it and that other sites already publish about it. Some competition is a sign of demand. | You have found search suggestions for the topic, three affiliate programs and three sites already publishing on it. |
One action from each of the other five stages, as the checklist gives them
| Action | Why it matters | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 2: get reliable web hosting | Look for SSL, automatic backups, helpful support and clear renewal terms, not just the first-term price. | You have written down the renewal price and where your backups are kept. |
| Stage 3: compare commission rates | Compare the full terms, not just the percentage: cookie length, one-off or recurring commission, payout threshold and payment method. | Each program’s commission, cookie length, payout threshold and refund window are written side by side. |
| Stage 4: add your affiliate links naturally | Link where it helps the reader, disclose it clearly near the link and mark the link as sponsored (rel="sponsored"). | Every affiliate link has a disclosure near it and is marked rel="sponsored". |
| Stage 5: consider email marketing | An email list is an audience you own. Offer a useful freebie in exchange for an address. | Your sign-up form works and a test sign-up received the welcome email. |
| Stage 6: track your results and analytics | Measure visits, affiliate clicks and conversions per page so decisions are based on numbers, not hunches. | Visits, affiliate clicks and conversions per page are written down once a week. |

What to expect
- Most new sites take months before they earn anything, and no income is guaranteed (earnings disclaimer).
- The checklist never asks you to buy anything. Some guides it links to contain affiliate links; we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you, and those pages say so (affiliate disclosure). One of the follow-up emails describes our own $37 Launch Blueprint; it is optional, and the checklist is complete without it.
- It is a plan, not a course: each action is short, and the linked guide has the detail.
How it was made, and how we make money
Wealth Generation Academy wrote it. Our pages are drafted with AI assistance, then checked against our editorial policy and the sources they cite. Every tool review on this site is research only, and says so. Where we have our own data, we publish it: how we test a page with Lighthouse before paying for hosting up front, and how we make sure a free download reaches a real inbox.
We earn affiliate commissions on some tools we review, and we sell one product of our own, the $37 Launch Blueprint. The checklist recommends no brand and is complete on its own.

Questions about the checklist
Is the Affiliate Marketing Checklist really free?
Yes. It costs nothing and no card is asked for. Enter your first name and email address, reply VERIFY to our first email, and we email you the link to the checklist.
How is this different from other checklists?
Each of the 30 actions says why it matters and has a “done when” test that tells you it is finished; 17 of them also link to the guide on our site that walks you through them. You tick a box when you can show the result, not when you have read about it.
How long does it take?
The checklist gives a time estimate for each stage: one or two evenings for stage 1, about a weekend for stage 2, one or two evenings for stage 3, and a few hours per article for stage 4. Stages 5 and 6 are habits you repeat. These are estimates; work at your own pace.
Do I need to buy any tools or courses?
No. The checklist puts free steps first and links to guides that compare free and paid options. Some things, such as web hosting and a domain name, usually cost money, and you decide what to buy and when.
What format is the checklist in?
A 6-page PDF with tick boxes you can use on screen and space for notes, and a printable web page whose ticks are remembered in your browser. Print either one.
How does it fit with the Starter Kit and the Tools Checklist?
This checklist is the whole path in order. The free Affiliate Business Starter Kit turns stages 1 to 3 into fill-in worksheets and a 14-day plan, and the free Tools Checklist covers choosing tools in more depth.
How do I get access to the checklist?
Enter your first name and email address in the form on this page. We send you a short email first, from Wealth Generation Academy (wga@mail.thesmartlearningpath.com), with the subject “Reply VERIFY to get your Affiliate Marketing Checklist”. Reply to that email from the same address with the word VERIFY, and we email you a link to the checklist (a 6-page PDF and a printable web page) as soon as your reply arrives. Then come six short emails over the next 13 days on using it (one describes our own $37 Blueprint), then at most one email a week, when we publish a new guide. The unsubscribe link at the bottom of every email stops all of them. Can’t find the first email? Check Spam, Junk and Promotions, or submit the form again with the right address.
