Decide whether you need a suite or a smaller research tool

Write the report you need to produce this month. Compare tools against that task, rather than subscribing because a review lists many features.

You need a broader SEO suite

If your task combines site audits, competitor research and ongoing tracking, check the exact Semrush plan, users and report limits. Its feature list is not proof that every report is included in the entry tier.

Your job is keyword and search-result research

Compare KWFinder and the Mangools tools if that narrower job covers your needs. Check lookup capacity, tracked keywords and update frequency before choosing a paid tier; it is not a substitute for every suite feature.

You have not published a useful first page

Finish one topic outline and inspect its search results before adding a subscription. A free research session can reveal whether you have a recurring paid-tool requirement at all.

Test whether the extra features justify the bill

Fictional quotes, not either vendor’s prices: tool A costs $50/month and suite B costs $140/month. Twelve monthly payments total $600 and $1,680, a difference of $1,080 before tax or extras.

If B saves three hours each month and you value that time at $30/hour, the assumed value is $90/month, exactly the extra bill. If it saves only one hour, the assumed value is $30 against a $90 extra charge. Measure the time on the same task; time value is not cash revenue or proof that either subscription will pay for itself.

Confirm the checkout currency, full billing-period charge, seats, add-ons, trial end, renewal and cancellation terms. Keep annual monthly equivalents separate from monthly billing. Mangools states that subscriptions renew until disabled; verify the current terms before committing.

A first week with Semrush

  1. Days 1 and 2, Domain Overview: enter a competitor’s site and list three of its pages that rank for buyer searches in your niche.
  2. Days 3 and 4, Keyword Magic Tool: search your main product type, filter for question and “best”, “vs” or “review” keywords, and pick five lower-difficulty keywords for your next pages.
  3. Days 5 to 7, Site Audit: run it on your own site, fix the errors first (broken links, missing titles), then the warnings.

By the end of the week you have a short list of pages to write and a fix list. If you would not use these reports every week, a cheaper tool may be enough: see the best keyword research tools.

For affiliates who publish content regularly, usually yes: keyword research, competitor gaps and rank tracking cover most of the SEO work an affiliate site needs. If you only publish occasionally, a cheaper tool may be enough.

Is Semrush easy to use for beginners?

The core reports are approachable, but the number of tools has a learning curve. Start with Keyword Magic Tool, Domain Overview and Site Audit before exploring the rest.

How does Semrush compare to Ahrefs?

Both are complete SEO suites; Ahrefs is often chosen for backlink research and Semrush for its wider marketing toolkit. See our Semrush vs Ahrefs comparison.

Can I try Semrush for free?

Yes. Semrush has a free account (1 demo project and 10 reports a day, no credit card), and its paid plans have “Try for free” buttons (Semrush pricing page, checked October 23, 2026). Read the trial terms at checkout before you sign up.

What is the best Semrush plan for bloggers?

Most solo bloggers start on the entry plan and upgrade only when they hit project or keyword-tracking limits. Compare current limits on the official pricing page.

Does Semrush help with content optimization?

Yes. Its content tools help with topic research, SEO writing suggestions and on-page checks, which is useful for affiliate articles and reviews.
